چکیده

Oxidation of pyrite in aqueous solutions in contact with air (oxygen 20%) was studied at 25°C using short-term batch experiments. Fe and SO4 2 were the only dissolved Fe and S species detected in these solutions. After a short period, R [S]tot/[Fe]tot stabilized from 1.25 at pH 1.5 to 1.6 at pH 3. These R values were found to be consistent with previously published measurements (as calculated from the raw published data). This corresponds to a nonstoichiometric dissolution (R 2) resulting from a deficit in aqueous sulfur. Thermodynamics indicate that S( I) oxidation can only produce S(s) 0 and SO4 2 under these equilibrium conditions. However, Pourbaix diagrams assuming the absence of SO4 2 indicate that S2O3 2 and S4O6 2 can appear in these conditions. Using these species the simplest expected oxidation mechanism is FeS2 s 1.5O2→ Fe 2 S2O3 2

Acid leaching and dissolution of major sulphide ore minerals: processes and galvanic effects in complex systems

The kinetics and mechanisms of dissolution of the major base metal sulphide minerals, pyrite, chalcopyrite, galena and sphalerite in acidic (chloride) media have been investigated. Minerals were ground in air, then dissolved in air-equilibrated solutions at pH 2.5, while monitoring the redox potential. Solution samples were analysed by ICP-AES and HPLC, and surfaces of residual sulphides analys...

Kinetics of chalcopyrite galvanic leaching using sulfate media at the low temperature in the GalvanoxTM process

In this research work, the dissolution of chalcopyrite was investigated under atmospheric pressure, with sulfate media at low temperatures, in 30°C to 50°C. In the galvanic interaction between chalcopyrite and pyrite, pyrite is used as a leaching catalyst. Effects of different parameters such as temperature, stirring speed, pyrite to chalcopyrite ratio, particle size, and solution potential wer...

Comment on ‘‘Pyrite dissolution in acidic media’’ by M. Descostes,

In a recent paper, Descostes et al. (2004) present data on a series of pyrite oxidation batch experiments conducted near pH 2 and 3 where they demonstrate very well the non-stoichiometric dissolution/oxidation of pyrite in acidic solutions through an extensive laboratory investigation of S/Fe ratios. The authors utilized this data to propose a ‘mechanism’ of pyrite oxidation based on these data...

Leaching of pyrite by acidophilic heterotrophic iron-oxidizing bacteria in pure and mixed cultures.

Seven strains of heterotrophic iron-oxidizing acidophilic bacteria were examined to determine their abilities to promote oxidative dissolution of pyrite (FeS2) when they were grown in pure cultures and in mixed cultures with sulfur-oxidizing Thiobacillus spp. Only one of the isolates (strain T-24) oxidized pyrite when it was grown in pyrite-basal salts medium. However, when pyrite-containing cu...

Chalcopyrite Dissolution at 650 mV and 750 mV in the Presence of Pyrite

The dissolution of chalcopyrite in association with pyrite in mine waste results in the severe environmental issue of acid and metalliferous drainage (AMD). To better understand chalcopyrite dissolution, and the impact of chalcopyrite’s galvanic interaction with pyrite, chalcopyrite dissolution has been examined at 75 °C, pH 1.0, in the presence of quartz (as an inert mineral) and pyrite. The p...
